A great way to add a special touch to a photo is to add text over it. Canvas and Fabric Printing will show you how to best edit your images.
Add a family name to a family photo, a date to a photo taken at a special occasion, or add a quote over a photo taken on vacation. Although Canvas and Fabric Printing can add text to a photo for you, we know a lot of you are very creative and hands on, and would love to learn how to add text on your own. So, in today’s blog post, we are going to show you how to do just that. To add the text, we are going to use a free online tool called PicMonkey.
When on the PicMonkey home page, hover over the ‘Edit’ icon at the top, then choose where you want to upload your photo from. We will upload a vacation photo from our desktop. Before your image opens, PicMonkey will ask you what size you want to set your image at. Choose the largest setting so you have flexibility regarding your image size.
After you choose the size setting, your image will open. Before you begin with the fun stuff, you will want to crop your image so that is is the size of the FabWood you want. For this tutorial, we want to size our image for a 16”x20” FabWood Print. To crop the image, go to the ‘Basic Edits’ menu. Do that by selecting the top icon at the far left vertical list of menu icons. It looks like three horizontal lines with a dot on each. Then select ‘crop’. There is a section in crop where you can enter the ‘actual size’ of the image in pixels. Because we can produce a great print at 150 dpi (dots per inch) of resolution, you will want to enter a pixel size of 2,400 x 3,000 to crop your image for a 16×20 print. To get the 2,400 x 3,000 pixels, we simply multiplied 150 (dots per inch) by 16 of the width, then multiply it by 20 for the height. After you enter your pixels and then properly position the crop box, select the green ‘Apply’ button. The next step is where the magic begins. First, you may want to adjust the image itself. To adjust your image, you will want to use the tools to the far left. The top two icons are the ‘Basic Edits’ (icon looks like three horizontal lines with a dot on each) and the ‘Effects’ (magic wand) tools. The Basic Edits section lets you play around with image cropping, exposure, color, etc. The Effects section has a lot of super cool pre-set effects that you an apply to your photo. So play around and have fun!
Once you are finished adjusting your photo, you can move on to adding the text. To do that, click the ‘Text’ tool (icon with upper and lower case T’s) to the far left. The text menu will appear to the left of your image. You can choose to use the fonts already in PicMonkey by selecting ‘Ours’ just below the ‘Add text’ button. If you want to use text you have on your computer, just choose ‘Yours’. We are using a font called Bonerica that is on our own computer. When you find the font you want to use, click on it, then click on the ‘Add text’ box near the top of the Text menu. A box will appear on your image where you can type your text. After you type in your text, you can change the size, position, color, etc. Just play around until you get it the way you want. The options are almost limitless.
When you have completed your design, it’s time to save it so that you can upload it for print on a FabWood Print. To save your image, choose the ‘save’ button at the top of the screen. The save menu will open up. Give your image a name, and then choose ‘Sean’ as the quality. Don’t touch the dimensions, as you already set them when you first opened your image, but if you want to change the size, this is where you can do it. Just remember to multiply the new size in width and height by the 150 dpi to get the number of pixels. When you are ready, click the green ‘save to my computer’ button near the bottom.
You now have an image ready to upload to Canvas and Fabric Printing. Upload your image today and get yourself a fabulous FabWood Print.
